Spike Lee’s JOE’S BED-STUY BARBERSHOP: WE CUT HEADS at The French Institute
Perhaps the most unexpected, but certainly not unwelcome, addition to The French Institute Alliance Francaise’s month-long tribute to influential programmer Jackie Raynal, Spike Lee’s NYU thesis film Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads will screen tomorrow, Tuesday 4/14, at 4 p.m. Raynal programmed two long running (but sadly long gone) art house theaters in Manhattan - The Carnagie Hall and Bleecker Street Cinemas - and it was at the latter where Raynal presented Lee’s stylized debut in 1983.
The film screens at 4 p.m. and will be followed by Lacombe Lucien, a film by Louis Malle, at 7:30.
The series continues on Tuesdays in April, with upcoming screenings of works by Jacques Baratier and Raynal herself, who, in addition to her duties as curator, was an actress, editor and director in her own right.
